Birdline Victoria Update No. 191

Sightings
23 January
Yesterday Maarten Hulzebosch found a gull which he believes to be a Laughing
Gull at the mouth of the Little River in the Western Treatment Plant
(Werribee Sewage Farm). It appears to be an adult either moulting into or in
winter plumage. It seemed quite approachable but at times was difficult to
pick out from the flock of silver gulls assembled there. Maarten suggests
that one could wade out to it's position if it is in the same spot but asks
people to use common sense and not flush other birds such as roosting waders
by walking on dry mud. He noticed that the gulls started flying around and
feeding at about 4 pm so a visit before then might be more productive. Note
that Franklin's Gull has not been ruled out for certain yet and more
photographs and notes would be useful. Thanks Rohan Clarke.
20 January
At Seaford Swamp were 7 Common Greenshank. Thanks Ben Sinclair.
18-19 January
1 White-throated Needletail at Refuge Cove and 2 swifts or needletails at
Biddies Cove, Wilson's Promontory. Thanks George Appleby.
18 January
1 adult male Turquoise Parrot observed flying through bushland at the
junction of the Cabbage Tree - Cape Conran and Old Coast roads. This species
appears to be regularly sighted in the coastal area between Cape Conran and
Bemm River. Thanks Len Axen.
17 January
2 fully grown Wedge-tailed Eagles hunting over Bills Creek, Wairewa East
Gippsland. This is the 1st sighting of wedgies in area for 2 years by this
observer. Thanks Ray Shaw.
16 January
75 White-throated Needletail over Ryans Lookout Warby Ranges. Thanks Michael
Ramsey.
15 January
On the weekend banding trip to Rushworth, 6 White-throated Needletails were
seen on Friday night, and 6 more on Saturday night about 7 pm. All were
above the north-west section of the park (near Ludlows Dam). Danny Rogers
also saw a pair of Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens feeding a juvenile Shining
Bronze-Cuckoo near Stumpy Dam (we managed to catch and band the male
Heathwren and the Bronze-Cuckoo). Thanks Dean Ingwersen.
15 January
1 Australian Pratincole seen near south-east corner of Lake Murphy near
Kerang. Thanks Simon Starr.

1 Wood Sandpiper seen at Macdonalds swamp near Kerang. Thanks Simon Starr.

At Braeside Park were 2 Darter, 1 Latham's Snipe, approx 25 Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper, 1 Australian Spotted Crake, 1 Whistling Kite. Thanks Ben
