Young Channel-billed Cuckoos are still present here in Katoomba (upper Blue Mountains, 100km west of Sydney). Two juveniles are calling constantly about 200 metres from my house, and being fed by Pied Currawongs. Fifteen years ago it was quite unusual to see any this far up the mountains.

On another matter, it seems to have been a good breeding season for Pilotbirds around here. Strangely they are turning up in groups of 4 everywhere, the latest occasion being yesterday when I was leading a walk on the Nature Track at Wentworth Falls. Again, at least two of these were juveniles. Everyone got brilliant views. In previous years I don't think I've ever seen more than 2 or 3 together.

Hi Colin

I have not heard the Channel-billed Cuckoo calling in my area in Seven
Hills (40 km west of Sydney CBD) for the past few weeks and that may
indicate that they have left also. However, several Koels are still
calling quite loud in my area, especially in the evening and early
morning. They have departed as late as mid April in my area. Last
Thursday, I saw a baby Koel in the Seven Hills shopping centre car park
constantly begging for food to its Red Wattlebird parents (I wish I had
my camera).
