I didn't get much birding in yesterday - not even any of the ancillary
birding that comes from looking out of the window when I'm at my desk.
But around 5pm or so, I was lured outside by a Koel so noisy as to make me
wonder if he was on the verandah.
Straightaway I found myself witness to a 15 minute extravaganza of noise and
activity as three male Koels chased each other and a female all over the
garden - all four birds calling incessantly and ear-piercingly, both in
flight and from their various perches.
At the same time two Dollarbirds were making chattering sallies to & from
the top of the gum tree nearest the house, short sweeping circuits above the
Koels which were dashing furiously around in the branches beneath them.
Already an exciting feast of action for the eyes and the ears, BUT THEN I
heard the unmistakable call of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos not too far off,
and three big Black Cockies came swimming through the sky in their slow
round-winged leisurely way, calling gently and evocatively, straight
overhead - above and apart from all the frenetic activity just in front of
me.
Phew! Just have to share the meal!
