Tim your frustration wasn't as great as mine. I was listening to the ABC and they had all sorts of problems working it out. They knew it wasn't a Silver Gull (which someone has rung in and said don't call them seagulls) but the suggestions were:
Plover
Glossy Juvenile Ibis
and finally Juvenile Straw-necked Ibis.
I didn't get to see it on the TV, but it sounds like they might have got it right.

I remember seeing what was probably a Straw-necked Ibis on the ground while
watching cricket on the TV a few weeks ago. It was equally frustrating as I
got only glimpses of it as the ball speed past that area of the field - from
memory I think it was out behind square leg at the time (behind cover when
they changed ends).
