Cassowary feeding youngsters with figs
I was working in the garden at Cassowary House, Kuranda on January 4 and had an interesting encounter with the Cassowary family who come on most days. There is one of the cauliflorous figs growing here which is now ripe, the fruits of which extend down the trunk to near ground level. One of the juveniles was jumping up and trying to reach the figs, so the male Cassowary came over and reached up to pick the small fruits, placing them on the ground so the youngsters could eat them. He did this several times before they lost interest and wandered slowly away.
What an exemplary parent, he is amazingly patient with the vociferous and demanding young, yet in 8 months or so he will turn viciously on them and drive them away.
