Happy New Year.
Drove in to our drive yesterday afternoon about 4.30pm and stopped to see if
the Western Gerygone were still around. I found their nest, empty and on the
ground on 26th after a bit of wind (it may have been blown down but may also
have been predated by Pied Currawong?), but have seen or heard them every day
since. Luckily I pulled up where it was easy to see one of them working on the
nearly completed replacement!
At that moment the only Dollardbird seen on the property in 2004 squawked and
landed in their 'usual' dead tree.
Then the pair of Collared Sparrowhawk gave a short aerial display and while
watching them (and a much higher Wedge-tailed Eagle) I discovered a small swarm
of swifts - the first seen in the 3 years we have been here. They were high
enough that they were invisible without binoculars and I was not able to ID
them, but I kept scanning hopefully and got another glimpse of specks in front
of a cloud, a couple of km east a few minutes later, which I think were
possibly the same group of swifts.
