I don't have any explanation for why honey-eaters attack who they do,
but I can say they seem to be a pugnacious clan. The Red Wattlebirds
in this area (far south coast of NSW) are far from the most
aggressive. Outside of breeding time, they don't seem too bad. During
breeding, I saw them go after Little Wattlebirds, Currawongs, and
Satin Bowerbirds. The Bell Miners are, by far, the most aggressive
birds I notice regularly. In the past 12 months, I've seen them
aggressively go after the following species:
White-Bellied Sea-Eagle
Fan-Tailed or Brush Cuckoo
L. Kookaburra
Crimson Rosella
Pied Currawong
A. Raven
Grey Butcherbird
Satin Bowerbird
E. Whipbird
Noisy Friarbird
They seem suspicious of pretty nearly everything. I've seen Little
Wattlebirds going after the following species:
A. Magpie
Rainbow Lorikeet
Little Wattlebirds
Wallaga Lake 2546 NSW
