Hi Birders,
Went to Mitchell Park and Pitt Town lagoon this
morning and as usual saw some great birds - although it was getting rather hot
at 10:30 when I made my way home!
At Mitchell Park it was fairly quiet this morning
compared to previous recent visits. There were plenty of White-Throated
Gerygone and Sacred Kingfishers around, perhaps less
numbers of Scarlet Honeyeaters than a month ago (or they
weren't calling). Also of interest was 2 White-Necked Heron, a
number of Olive-Backed Orioles, Wonga
Pigeon, Brush and Common Bronzewing, and a group of
White-Winged Chough near the entrance.
At Pitt Town, lots and lots of Sharp-Tailed
Sandpiper although impossible to count due to weeds and vegetation
overgrowth, but did get close to a number of areas where groups were in excess
of 30. Unfortunately didn't see the Wood Sandpiper, but did also see plenty of
Latham's Snipe. A good bird to watch hunting the reeds was
a Australian Hobby, and also present was
a number of Pink-Eared Duck, Hardhead, a few
Australian-Shoveler, a few groups of Brown
Quail, a small flock of Nutmeg Mannikin, about
6 White-Necked Herons and a single Baillon's
Crake.
Have a great Christmas and all the best for
2005.
Simon.
