Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be prepared to divulge some information
about birding around Cairns and the Mission Beach area for a trip I am
planning with another colleague.
First, does anyone know if Coquette Pt on the Johnson River is still
undeveloped? I had heard it was under threat but at least a couple of years
ago was a great place for mangrove birding. If it has lost its value and
someone can suggest another area just as good anywhere in the region, I
would be grateful.
Unsurprisingly, we are also hoping that there is an active Rufous Owl roost
site someone we can access. If anyone is prepared to share that information
we would be very grateful.
The only other bird which we would like a specific site for is red-necked
crake. I have heard that some of the pools around resorts in Cairns are
good. If there is anywhere they are seen readily, it would be very useful.
Otherwise I am certain we can find one somewhere during the trip.
Obviously any other information would be gratefully received but since most
birds are reasonably widespread and the only way to find them is to spend
time in the habitat, that is what we intend to do. Nonetheless, there are a
number of scarce or declining specialities e.g. blue-faced parrot finch and
white browed robin, that it may be useful to know current sites.
Thankyou in advance,
Simon Mustoe.
