I think its important to make a distinction between what one party
might 'just happen to think' and a detailed review of what is being
proposed, and conclusions drawn therefrom.

The 'hoops' that it is claimed farmers will have to jump through will
not even be triggered in a large number of cases, because of the
numerous 'exemptions' and their unenforceability.

I think we should be concerned about learning the lessons of the last
native vegetation act, which went on with all its flaws for 8 years,
and enabled extensive clearing. The main avenue for this clearing
was through exemptions and lack of enforceability, which now beset
the latest Regulation.

The lesson surely is that we should not be taking any chances, and
should be doing everything in our power to make sure this regulation
and supporting documents are as good as they possibly can be, rather
than saying she'll be right mate.......and waiting another decade
before the problems are fixed, whilst birds and other fauna
experience potentially permanent impacts.

And whilst the farming lobby has power, money and quite extraordinary
influence (as Craig pointed out), one of the few things we have going
for us is people who care about these issues taking some action on
them.

And the documents are on public exhibition, which is a rare
opportunity to let the Government know what the people think. So, I
find it very hard to find one good reason not to exercise the little
power that we have to urge for something much better in relation to
landclearing in NSW at this point.

Cheers
Carmel
