Hi all,

Had a few hours on Friday afternoon to poke around my local area and
found a pair of nesting Sacred Kinfishers. Their hollowed out termite
nest is about 2.5m above ground and right next to the main road in the
area, so I may try and get some photos next week without disturbing
the parents. There are obviously chicks in the nest as the parents
are feeding them, but I won't know how many til they fledge. The
birds are breeding on a new property development (it's a miracle
there's any trees left in the area) so they probably won't be breeding
there again. Also breeding on the block for the last time are a
family of Bush Thick-knees. Baby has finished fledging and is almost
indistigushable from mum and dad now. I'd say there were many near
misses from cars (including one from mine), as they were seen quite
frequently crossing the main road late at night. Also on this block
was my first white-throated gerygone for inner Brisbane and for my
area. A pretty good afternoon all in all, with 51 species in all
(list at end of email).

Regards,
Chris - Brisbane
