The Painted Snipe on Ash Island were present again this morning. The
location is 1.5km in from the bridge over the Hunter River near
McDonalds, Hexham. They are in the grazed kikuyu and paspalum swampy
paddock opposite the entrance to the model areoplane flying field. There
is a body of open water on the far side of the field. The snipe move
around in the grass between the road and the open water. This morning
they were about 100 to 150 metres from the road. Sometimes they are
clearly visable with a scope, at other times they vanish into long
kikuyu. There are also many teal feeding in the same area as well as
nesting stilts.
