Jim and others,
I am keen to have look for these birds on Sunday if they are still about.
Can anyone keep me (and any others) up to date with these birds. If anyone
has success, particularly on Saturday can they please let me know. If they
are still there Sunday I will be doing the F3 trip on Sunday morning.
Cheers,
Peter

Subject: [BIRDING-AUS] Re:Painted Snipe on Ash Island, Newcastle NSW

On November 22 Edwin Vella asked about the Painted Snipe that had been
observed earlier by Hunter Bird Observers Club member Neville McNaughton on
Ash Island in the Hunter Estuary near Newcastle, NSW . The Snipe have since
been observed by other club members.
A male and female pair of Painted Snipe were still present in Melaluca
Swale this morning. This location is on the main road through Ash Island,
roughly one kilometre past the bridge and adjacent to the model aeroplane
field. They were situated in grazed paspalum swamp about 100 metres from
the road on the right hand side . I scanned the swale for about an hour
before finding them. Good telescope views were obtained although they are
still birds with shortish legs who live in longish grass.
