Just replying to this because I realise I accidently sent my original reply to the poster only and not the group.

My cat has had up to 4 bells on her collar at one time and still successfully caught brown honeyeaters all too frequently. Thing is the BHs seemed to be all she caught - possibly because they nest so close to the ground. She's now kept in at night - which is when she'd make her catches and bring them in, causing my dad to fly into a rage and me to throw the cat in the laundry while I frantically tried to catch the bird and rush it to the vet.

So yeah, I know firsthand that bells don't work. There's a collar you can get (which is pretty expensive) that makes a bipping sound when the cat pounces. To me it seems that that's too late for a bird to get away.
