Greetings to all you birders around the world,

For anybody planning a birding visit to South Africa, very often one of the
highlights of the trip will be a pelagic trip out of Cape Town. After all,
many experienced worldwide travellers have commented that the Cape Town
pelagic trips rank as one of the best one day pelagic trips in the world.

To hopefully help you in planning potential future trips, you may be
interested to know that our seasonality tables for both the pelagic birds
and marine mammals seen on Cape Town pelagic trips have now been updated on
our website at
www.zestforbirds.co.za

As far as we are concerned, this is now the most up to date set of seasonal
statistics available anywhere for Cape Town. The information has been
gleaned from about 200 one day long pelagic trips into the waters south west
of Cape Point over the last 6 years!

Some interesting trends are now starting to show. As far as the pelagic
birds are concerned, May is the month that has the most species recorded
followed closely by June, then September and November and then August. In
terms of species where your chances are reasonably good of seeing them,
December is the month that produces the most of these, followed by November
and January. And June has the highest number of rare or vagrant species. 48
pelagic species in total have been recorded.

In terms of the marine mammals, August has the most species recorded,
followed by September and October. In terms of "reasonable chance species",
September and October are the best. And in terms of the rarer species,
August definitely seems to be the best month. 16 species of marine mammal in
total have been recorded.

But, please go and have a look for yourself. Hopefully, it will be of some
use in planning your next trip.

Kind Regards
Trevor
