G'day all

As most of you would know Bush Stone-curlews are virtually extinct in sw
Victoria. There are odd reports of individuals from north and east of
Hamilton but they have essentially gone as a breeding species. Foxes would
be the main cause. On the northern outskirts of Hamilton there is the
Community Parkland - a large woodland-grassland reserve that was
vermin-proofed as part of the recovery program for Eastern Barred
Bandicoots. Although foxes are still present they are at a much lower
density than in the rest of the landscape and are regularly targeted.

There are landholders in NSW who are working on Stone-curlew recovery
programs and they are looking for release sites. A proposal has been
submitted to the Southern Grampians Shire council that our Community
Parkland be one of these release sites.

It sounds like a good idea to me but I have had nothing to do with such
schemes and wonder what comments birding-aus folk would make. I'll pass on
your comments to the chap with the idea.

Cheers

Steve Clark
Hamilton, Victoria
