Phil,
Some thoughts for you.
1. National Parks
The Parks Victoria web pages have detailed maps and other information for
reserves across Victoria. There are a number of parks within driving
distance from Daylesford. Check the following site:
http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/
2. State forests etc
There are various crown land reserves, particularly state forests and some
bushland reserves in the area you are visiting. Many can be checked by
going to the Victorian Government Environment Conservation Council web site
as follows:
http://www.veac.vic.gov.au/previous.htm
and then trying the links to the following study areas: Ballarat and
(Special investigations) Box-ironbark (for the Bendigo area).
You may need to have a topographic map (eg. 1: 100 000 or 1: 250 000) at
hand to find some of the sites as not every ECC report has maps.
There are a number of forest reserves on the outskirts of both Ballarat and
Bendigo, some of which are now for nature conservation. The local
information centres should be able to help.
2. Dedicated bird reserves
The Bird Observers Club of Australia has a reserve at Linton (Clarksdale
Sanctuary) about 35km se of Ballarat. It is accessible to the public by
foot only and can be quite good for woodland birds. The sanctuary is on
the Linton-Piggoreet Rd. se of Linton.
If you have the time, the state database for fauna is keen to receive data
on all sightings you make. Send your observations to the following.
