For those following the progress of the White-browed Scrubwrens
nesting in my jasmine.... In my previous posting on Wednesday 22nd I
mentioned that the egg(s) were due to hatch any day. Late on Friday
afternoon (24/9/04), I saw the female carry something into the nest.
She remained inside.
I was then away from home for a few days and on my return yesterday,
I found feeding of young in progress. Male and female are bringing
insects and I can hear an amazing variety of soft, high-pitched
feeding sounds coming from the nest. However at this stage, feeding
doesn't seem to be particularly frequent with gaps of 20-30 minutes
with no sight or sound of the birds.
Ricki Coughlan brought to my attention that scrubwrens can be
co-operative breeders and indeed, I have noticed a third bird hanging
around with the breeding pair since the young have hatched. I'm
pretty sure this bird played no part in the building or incubation
stages and remained unseen during those times. It also reminds me
that I was seeing three birds in the garden before nest building
commenced. So far, it's been difficult to tell if this bird has been
participating in feeding of the nestling(s) - they are all still
remarkably secretive.
Ricki, if you happen to read this, I've been trying to reply to your
email but keep getting "undeliverable" messages. If anyone is in
contact with Ricki can you please pass this info on. Thanks.
