Hi all
After dropping my sister at the airport at some ungodly hour on Sunday morning
i decided to visit a patch of green in the Melways that I hadnt visisted before
so I went to Kinglake National Park (Just North to North east of Melbourne).
Having done no research I drove into Kinglake township then followed a sign to
Jehosophat Gully. Wandered for about an hour and a half down the trail which
was quite pleasant. Saw 22 species in all including a few very interesting ones
for me. My first red-browed treecreepers after looking a number of times for
them over the past few years, on the drier sides of the spur there were plenty
of white-throated and upon moving to the wetter side there were a couple of
red-browed. Also saw a number of large-billed scrubwrens, this being the
closest to Melbourne I have seen them. Also of interest were pairs of Scarlet
Robin and Crescent Honeyeater as well as more usual bushland suspects. There
were fresh lyrebird scracthings everywhere though i did not see any and if they
were around they were not vocal.
Drove back the long way through Toolangi, Healesville, Worri Yallock, Gembrook
and Roweville stopping at a number of places along the way. At Woori Yallock
there were a large number of cattle egrets including some in breeding plumage.
Finished the day with a couple of hours at Edithvale birdhide which had
shovellers, hardheads and blue-billed ducks all showing well at the front of
the hide. No migratory waders apparent as yet.
Good days birding and a new bird!
Cheers
Tim
