Hi all, went to Currarong (Jervis Bay) yesterday
and Shoalhaven heads (nr Nowra) on the way back to Sydney. At Currarong saw a
couple of good target species namely Tawny-Crowned
Honeyeater and also a single Eastern Bristlebird plus
the usual large numbers of New-Holland Honeyeater and
Wattlebirds. In the trees around the car park was the usual
Scarlet Honeyeaters and also Striated
Thornbill.
At Shoalhaven Heads was 4 Gull-Billed
Terns and a single Caspian Tern. Also
Bar-Tailed Godwits, Red-Necked Stint
(including 1 in full breeding plumage), Red Knots (11),
Pacific-Golden Plover, and Eastern Curlew. A
real treat was watching a White-Bellied Sea-Eagle swoop down on
the water to catch a large eel, which kept dragging the bird back to the water
every time it tried to take off - unfortunately it eventually dropped the eel
after being mobbed by Gull-Billed Terns - I was fortunate enough to view
this at close range (but without a camera!). Also present was a Swamp
Harrier.
Cheers
Simon.
