This morning 2 Sacred Kingfishers turned up at our
house at Kupungarri/Mt Barnett along the Gibb River Rd. Having lived for 10
years in Papua New Guinea we have been accustomed to seeing hundreds of Sacred
Kingfishers arrriving in PNG in March and leaving again at the end of September.
Although we have been living/travelling in Australia for 2 years now this is the
first time we have been up north at this time of the year and it is really neat
to see the Australian migrants coming home as it were. We used to get a few
Black-faced Cuckooshrikes on Bougainville too but there are so many residents
here you would never know if the birds you were seeing were from PNG or not. So
with the Dollarbird the other day and various waders it is a good time to be out
and about in the far north.
