Hi Murray,
Found Lewin's Rail in Castlecrag this morning, about 6 km. nne. of
the Sydney Harbour Bridge, for those that don't know.
It was reported some time ago and (presumably the same bird) became
the unintended victim of a trap, three nights in a row. At the time
it was identified as a Quail by the trappers (Council Staff). I had
my doubts.
Today I heard it call several times - "jek, jek, jek, jek, jek" and
on two other occasions it gave distinctive but soft, pig-like grunts,
two at a time.
It was finally found by myself and members of the local bush regen.
group, feeding beneath dense Lantana. Fleetingly, it came into the
open in order to pass from one area of Lantana to another. We had a
brief but very close view while it was in the open.
I should also let you know that we will be publishing "The Birds of
Willoughby" in the next few weeks. It is illustrated with some
lovely photographs and will describe the status of the 145 species
that have been found here during the past 25 years. Despite its
suburban nature, Willoughby has been home to, or has been visited by,
such interesting species as Brush-turkey, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Osprey,
Pacific Baza, Black Falcon, Square-tailed and Black Kites,
Buff-banded Rail, Wompoo, Rose-crowned and Superb Fruit-Doves,
Glossy Black-Cockatoo, Swift Parrot, Powerful Owl, Noisy Pitta etc.,
etc.. And now a Lewin's Rail.
Regards, Andy
