Greens pledge $15 million to save Daintree lowlands
Speaking in Brisbane today, Senator Kerry Nettle today threw the
Australian Greens support behind calls for the federal government to
contribute $15 million to assist buy back of freehold properties of
conservation significance in the Daintree lowlands.
"The Greens are taking a number of key environmental initiatives into
the coming federal election campaign in Queensland and the need to
protect the Daintree lowlands is central to that campaign," Senator
Nettle said.
The Douglas Shire Council and the Queensland Government have already
agreed to provide $5 million each towards the buy back program, but this
is not enough to protect the region's future.
"The Daintree lowlands are home to the oldest continuously existing
rainforest on earth," said Senator Nettle today. "The Daintree is
ecologically important, and supports nature-based tourism worth almost
$400 million annually."
"Guaranteeing the protection of the Daintree lowlands is essential - if
we do not act now, the conservation values of this region will face
ongoing erosion through development. This will have disastrous
implications for local tourism."
"The Greens are proud to support a $15 million federal contribution to
guarantee the success of the Daintree rainforest buy back program," said
Senator Nettle.
