Hi Anthea
Red-rumped Parrots are apparently increasing in number in the relatively
manicured streets of Northcote (just a bit further in towards the
Melbourne CBD from Anthea's patch). The Rainbow Lorikeets, though
locally numerous as well, seem mostly to pass over this area on their
daily commutes - leaving the Red-rumped Parrots and Eastern Rosellas to
eke out a living on the suburban streets below!
I presume, correctly or otherwise, that they're nesting in hollows in
plane trees - these trees have lots of holes, cracks and fissures,
particularly those that have been pollarded in the earlier part of their
lives. The RRPs seem to pick up enough introduced grass/etc seeds from
footpath nature strips, local parks - and there's actually a small patch
of native wallaby-grass (Austrodanthonia sp) on a nature strip behind us!
