Hi Birdos,
Tony Crittenden reported a possible Bittern in flight at Sydney airport. In
this dry time there could be good reasons why Bitterns and other waterbirds
are relocating. Some of the wetlands at Eastlakes, the airports swamps and
at Kurnell are suitable Bittern habitats. However before commiting myself, I
would like to know whether the observer was using binoculars and whether he
considered that the Bittern may have been an immature Night Heron, which are
all stripey, and would be more likely to be seen around estuaries and tidal
areas, typical habitats around Sydney airport? Nankeen Night Herons are
reasonably common in the Sydney region.
