Hi Gil,
I'm quite familiar with the area in your post and have seen Grass Owl at
the Noosa Plain site at Cooloolah. (I assume you are talking about the
track that goes east from the Kin Kin 4WD track along the powerline)
Over a decade ago I attended a Ground Parrot banding session and some of
the volunteers flushed Grass Owl from there on several occasions. Over
the past seventeen years I've spent quite a few hours spotlighting and
have never seen Barn Owl there. My guess is that the bird you saw was
probably Grass Owl (but this is only my opinion!)
Did you get chance to visit Bymien Creek rainforest area along the 4WD
drive to Freshwater Creek? (short drive from Rainbow Beach)
Last year we had excellent views of Marbled Frogmouth after Colin Reid
reported them on Birding-Aus, we've also had Lewin's Rail, Pittas and
rainforest pigeons there.....a good spot.
