Apparantly the reason the Ord Cotton plan failed because of the cost,
insecticides every week or so, fuel and equipment having to be imported from
Perth or Asia, shipping cotton back to Perth, labour and so on. They did
try, we were up there in the initial phases of the project and there was a
functional gin (cotton).
They were growing irrigated rice on the Ord at that time(35 yrs ago)
as well , but the a packet we bought in Wyndham was grown in the USA! Reason
was that the US rice was much cheaper than the local product. Birds
ravaging the crops were a problem at that time, like Humpty Doo in the
Northern Territory.
