Hi All,
Whilst wandering through Rifle Range Reserve at Smiths Gully in the
outer
north-eastern fringes of Melbourne (Melway map 265 G3), agitated
honeyeaters prompted me to investigate further. An Owl, which initially I
put down as Boobook although I thought it had a very pale face without
obvious distinguishing 'goggles'. The underparts were streaked reddish and
it watched me through squinted eyes, but hardly moved as I walked under the
tree. It was perched on a limb under the canopy of a leafy tree, not in the
foliage. I wasn't expecting to find anything different to what I have at
home, so was not carrying a field guide..... OK, I know!
On checking the guides, I began to wonder if I had mistaken the identity of
the owl.
I've probably only seen owls (other than Powerful) about 6 times in the wild
and usually it's at night and they're calling, so no problems with
identification then.
Questions: Are there any records of Barking Owls in this part of Victoria
please?
Any other diagnostic features, other than the 'goggles' that I should look
for. I find that bird watchers quite often have their own 'tips' in
identifying birds which are usually very helpful.
Any information would be appreciated.
