Hi Birders,
The report by David Parker of a pair of Cape Barren Geese at Deniliquin in
south-west NSW, first seen by Tom Wheller on 27 July 2004 is of great
interest. There are not many recent records of CBG in NSW although they were
reported from the Murray River Region more regularly in the early part of
the 1990s.

Records since the 1950's include:-

The Edwards River, Moulamein and at Euston in 1956
Barham and Caldwell near Kerang (Vic) in 1966
3 32 km West of Wentworth Dec 1967-Feb 1968
6-8 at Morrisons Lake, Ivanhoe 19/2/1973
All these records could be expected however of more interest was of 1 at
Minnie Waters (Far North Coast) 2-7/1/1985, 1 Wollongong Golf Course
14/3/1989 and 1 Port Kembla Golf Course 10/10/19990. However if a banded
Orange-bellied Parrot can make its way from southern Tasmania to Sydney, I
daresay a lost Cape Barren Goose could find its way to the Clarence River.

Tom Wheller's observation does appear therefore to be the first since 1990
and is consistent with previous records for the south-west!
