Cas,

Ernie Hoskin in Birds of Sydney (1991), states:

There were no records for the County prior to the 1940s; at that time, birds were liberated from an aviary at Ingleburn. Later, birds were also released from Ku-ring-gai  Chase NP, Taronga Zoo Park and a private aviary at Gordon. At present, this bird is widespread in Sydney.

"the County" refers to the County of Cumberland, an area covering greater Sydney, bounded by the Hawkesbury-Nepean River in the  north and west, the coast in the east and a line from the Nepean to the coastal settlements between the Royal NP and Wollongong to the south. This is the area, together with the ocean to the east,  that is used for official lists of Sydney birds.

Trevor, I thought I'd read somewhere that crested pigeons were a more recent
immigrant to Sydney as well, haivng come in from drier areas.
