To comment on Trevor Ford's comment on my comment ......

I can't really judge whether or not 'A Birder's Guide to Japan by Jane
Washburn Robinson' is eccentric and subjective - but my experience is that
I've used it in Japan several times and found a lot of birding locations and
birds with it. If it turns up, just grab it as grist to the mill.

That doesn't mean that Mark Brazil's book might not be better, though
'infinitely' is a big call!

The best bet is to arm yourself with whatever books you can lay your hands
on, and go from there.

In which case, I suppose one ought to also mention ISBN 0-7136-8006-7, Mark
Brazil's "The Birds of Japan" - not a field guide, but an illustrated survey
of the status and distribution of Japan's Birds, with distribution maps. A
search for Mark Brazil's publications will doubtless also turn up his
"Finding Birds in Japan: The Tokyo Area", and "Finding Birds in Japan:
Honshu".

I think that has exhausted my limited knowledge on this topic - I last
birded in Japan in 1999, so I'm rapidly becoming out of date, as Trevor will
doubtless confirm!

G'day,

To comment on Bill Jolly's recommendation of, I would say that this book is
a most eccentric
offering, giving a very subjective look at Japan. If you get on with it,
fine, and it does contain useful information. But infinitely better is 'A
Birdwatcher's Guide to Japan' by Mark Brazil (ISBN 0-87011-849-8), a compact
and succinct site guide written by a birder for birders. It's the only one
I've seen in use in Japan.

Tim Murphy's "Tori no hon arimas' ka?" actually means "Can we go upstairs
and look at your bird etchings?"

Again, this email address is for outgoing messages only.

Trevor.
