G'day,
As I've tried to post a few messages over the past few weeks, and none of
them have appeared in the archives, I'll make this brief in case it also
disappears into the ether (along with the Black-tailed Gull).
I was in Japan birding last month and nobody there uses the 1982 field guide
(or any update). They are heavily into photographic guides, which isn't
surprising when you see the ratio of photographers to birders in the field.
However, unlike our photographic efforts, these guides are pretty good, with
different plumages illustrated clearly.
The original photographic guide may well be the single volume book with a
Japanese Robin on the front cover. The only English on the (back) cover
states "Wild Birds Of Japan" but there is enough English scattered
throughout the text to make it extremely useful in the field. But I do hope
it doesn't appear on Bribie Island otherwise we'll start seeing reports of
Lidth's Jay at Buckley's Hole on the Birds Queensland web site.
This guide has been superceded by a two-volume photographic guide. It is
excellent, twice the price, and is what most Japanese birders use.
I have no idea if either of these guides is available in Australia, but if
you emerge from Tokyo railway station on the side where the bus station is
and look across the main road and to your right, there's a large book shop
which has bird books on the first floor. (Showing them a picture of a bird
should do the trick.)
Again, this email address is for outgoing messages only.
Trevor.
