Birdline Victoria Update No. 165

Sightings
16 June
There were 3 Terek Sandpipers overwintering at Stockyard Point Westernport
Bay amongst 200 + Red-necked Stints, 45 Double-banded Plovers, 14 Red Knot,
Red-capped Plovers, thanks Graham Beal.
16 June
A surprise sighting at Lake Victoria, Point Lonsdale on Wednesday was a
tight flock of 90 Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, with a few in breeding plumage,
although this requires confirmation. Additionally there were around the
usual 200 or so Red-necked Stints which are generally here right through our
winter, thanks Rod Corinaldi.
15 June
There were six Hooded Plovers at Pt. Roadknight, five adult plumage and one
juvenile, probably same birds seen at Pt. Impossible (Breamlea), a couple of
months ago. Local said they have been at Roadknight for quite a while,
thanks John & Sue O’Malley.
14 June
Highlights from a trip to the Cathedral Ranges included a pair Wonga Pigeon,
good numbers of Lewin's Honeyeater and a small party of Beautiful Firetail,
seen on the roadside of South Cathedral Lane, approx 1 kilometre north of
the Maroondah Hwy (50 Meters past the entrance to the 'Cathedral Lavender
Farm'), thanks Tim Dolby.
13 June
There was a pair of Western Gerygone at Chiltern. Rarely reported in
Victoria in Winter, thanks Sean Dooley.
13 June
At the Glenmaggie Flora Reserve: White-naped Honeyeater, Striated Pardalote,
Rufous Whistler, White-throated Treecreeper and others. A particular delight
was to watch at close range a mixed species group bathing in a water hole.
Noisy Friarbirds are still about this region. I've not seen them here for
this long before, thanks Peter Ware.
13 June
7 Gang-gang Cockatoos were next to the walking path on the north bank of the
Yarra River, 200 metres west of the Burke Rd bridge, Ivanhoe, thanks James
Bailey.
12 June
An adult White-bellied Sea-Eagle was seen over the Werribee Open Range Zoo,
as well as up to 6 Buff-banded Rails scavenging around the picnic area.
11 June
A single Wedge-tailed Eagle was seen flying in a south-easterly direction
over the intersection of Station and Richards Road, Melton South, thanks
Micah Kawalek.
10 June
A small group of Red-rumped Parrots were seen feeding on the ground in Royal
Park South, adjacent to the intersection of Macarthur Road and The Avenue in
Parkville, thanks Micah Kawalek.
8 June
In the Geelong region there were 2 Wedge-tailed Eagles sitting on the same
branch in a tree above the Anglesea Coalmine, a wintering Eastern Curlew at
the Barwon River estuary, Sheepwash Road and 2 Black-tailed Native Hens at
Airey's Inlet swamp, thanks Peter Fuller.
8 June
There were two of Little Eagles gliding up to 100m over the south-west end
of Cherry Lake just beyond the hide, also where Cherry Creek meets the bay,
there was a single Little Egret, thanks Vin Lam.
8 June
North of Maffra in the foothills, hundreds of Eastern Spinebills in
flowering Red Box, also quite a few Crescent Honeyeaters, thanks Duncan
Fraser.
6 June
A Little Eagle was seen at Braeside Metropolitan Park (Southern picnic
ground), possibly the same one that was reported from the Eastern treatment
plant last weekend, thanks Giles Daubeney.
