Heading out in an easterly direction through Twofold Bay we quickly
picked up our first pelagic birds, Yellow-nosed and Shy Albatross, Giant
Petrel and a large mixed flock of Hutton's (10%) and Fluttering
Shearwaters (90%). We continued to collect more numbers as we cruised to
our first stop in 45 fathoms including Brown Skua, Black-browed
Albatross, Campbells Albatross and the first of several Bullers
Albatross (usually uncommon on Eden trips). At this point we released a
young male Northern Giant Petrel that had been found exhausted and taken
into care the previous week. Travelling further east to the edge of the
shelf we cut the engine and drifted out to 250 fathoms. Bird numbers
continued to increase adding Wandering Albatross, Providence Petrel,
Great-winged Petrel, Fairy Prion, Sooty Shearwater and 1 Grey-backed
Storm Petrel. On the return trip we added a lone Cape Petrel. Silver
Gull, Crested Tern and Gannet were present all day. A total of 19
species were seen outside of the bay.
