I made mention last night that Little Lorikeets were in good numbers in the
skies over the Sutherland Shire at the moment. I received a reply which
expressed a little doubt about this as this species is not commonly seen on
the Cumberland Plains. This is a fact with which I can generally concur and
am always surprised when the rare occassion arises where I come across this
species in Sydney.
Taking into consideration that many Sydney folks may be a little starved of
this delightful species I can happily report that the trees of the
Jannali/Kirrawee are full of Rainbow Lorikeets and Little Lorikeets. I've
just spent the day listening to their delightful screetchings and aerial
antics. There are many Eucalypts in flower in the area and the higher
pitched calls of the Little Lorikeets are clearly audible all day. In
flight, diagnosis is pretty straight forward: Little Lorikeets are
considerably smaller in size than the abundant Rainbow Lorikeets and have a
stumpy tail in comparison. Their call is more shrill and a little more
reverberant.
Best spot is the corner of The Boulevarde (get onto it from Toronto Drive,
Jannali) and Magnolia Street. You wont have to wait long before the
"Littles" make their presence known.
