Ian Hutton's explanation for the irruption of Buff-banded Rails on LHI is as follows. 'Re Buff banded rail - when I came in 1980 you could find one or two by careful observation in cut grass swamp at the foot of Mount Lidgbird . Then when cats were banned in 1982 they gradually spread and have been common in the settlement probably from about 1990 and increasing. There is a little bit of concern, but no facts, that they may be competing with Woodhens for food. They are pretty much confined to the settlement cleared areas, not in forest.'
