Hi Stuart,

I  just went through the archives, and found a couple of sightings of Common Sandpipers around Port Philip Bay in May:

1st May 2001: Mornington Peninsula by Bett Mitchell

http://menura.cse.unsw.edu.au:64800/2001/05/msg00004.html

5 May 2000: Yarraville by Ian Temby

http://menura.cse.unsw.edu.au:64800/2000/05/msg00251.html

And an interesting comment by Tony Russell about the year round residents at Penrice Slat fields:

From what i can gather they are more likely to over-winter than most waders.

Peter

Hi Peter,

A quick look at HANZAB suggests that this is a very unusual sighting.  They
say that birds rarely are reported in winter south of 26°S, with a reporting
rate of 0.3%.  They also say "rarely winter in NSW or Vic."

Has anyone else any thoughts?

Stuart
