A few minutes ago, whilst walking around my garden in southern Victoria,
enjoying seeing the plants smiling after a fantastic amount of 'real rain' I
had a magic birding moment.
A mixed species flock comprising the usual Brown and Yellow Thornbills,
Silvereyes, Grey Shrike-thrushes, Golden Whistlers, Grey Fantails and
Eastern Spinebills moved slowly through. However I soon realised there were
more bird sounds and actions than expected.
A small number of Brown-headed Honeyeaters were also there and very loud as
they called to each other from the tops of trees. Whilst I occasionally
have them here they usually just wave as they pass through.
The male Golden Whistler was very agitated. It was flying up to a juvenile
Golden Whistler and when on a branch very nearby bobbed its body at it.
When the juvenile took off the adult chased it for some distance.
There were at least 3 spinebills chasing each other around. And whilst all
this was going on a few Blackbirds were flying in and out of the group. As
two of my male Blackbirds have a white outside tail feather they appeared
even more spectacular than the spinebills in flight.
