Hello all,
I'm after a bit of advice on locations between Sydney and Melbourne.
A bird-photographer friend of mine from Hawaii is spending a few weeks in
May travelling with his wife from Sydney to Melbourne along the coast and
then back to Sydney along a more inland route. I've never done a trip like
this and most of this area is unknown territory for me.
In particular, does anyone know much about the Abobe Flats area near
Karbeethong/Mallacoota or Croajingolong National Park?
I was hoping that people might have some suggestions on places that either
shouldn't be missed or are worth spending time at. One of these days I
might make the trip myself! This time I'm probably going to be travelling
in a northerly direction in May and so won't be able to help them directly.
You mean the Adobe Mudbrick Holiday Flats in Mallacoota
(http://www.adobeholidayflats.com.au/). They are birdwatcher friendly and
have advertised in BOCA's magazine The Bird Observer for years.
Chiltern is right on the Hume and has a National Park
(http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1park_display.cfm?park=93) with remnant
Box-Ironbark forest. A good spot for Regent Honeyeaters. There'll be plenty
on it in the birding-aus archive.
If you get the chance, stop for lunch, afternoon tea or the night (it has
bed and breakfast accommodation) at The Mulberry Tree in Chiltern
(http://www.tourisminternet.com.au/chmulb.htm).
There are pelagics from Sydney, Wollongong and Eden if your friend is
interested. See http://users.bigpond.net.au/palliser/pelagic/boat-dir.html
for more details.
Barren Grounds Nature Reserve
(http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/parks.nsf/parkContent/N0401?OpenDocument&ParkKey=N0401&Type=xo)
is worth a look for Eastern Bristlebird.
