Hi all,

While doing my regular bush walk from the Warragal Road entrance, to the Troon Place entrance of the Sheldon Forest Track in Pymble in Sydneys North Shore,
I was just about at the end the walk when a man came up and told me that he had seen a rather large brown bird sitting next to the creek.

I investigated and eventually found the bird, it was a juvenile Black Bittern and was standing upright on the branch of a small wattle and being harrasssed by a Currawong.
It was a rather dark scaly brown in colour with buff streaks from chin down its breast and those two conspicous bold stripes that go from below the cheek down.
The bird did not make a noise.
I walked on and when I came back the bird had gone.

The Bittern was seen between the Troon Place start of the Sheldon Forest Track and the wooden footbridge crossing the creek- the reedy areas along this creek are probably the best bets if you would like to see this bird.

Cheers,

Kurtis Lindsay
