Hi Paul et al.
The problem with common names.....The plant I know of as Neem is Azadiracha
indica, which is not native to Australia and is used in Aust and elsewhere for
its medicinal, cosmetic and insecticidal properties. From the sound of the uses
to which it is being put, this is likely to be the Neem used at The Channon.
The leaves look superficially similar to those of Melia azedarach (White Cedar)
and it also has fleshy, bird-dispersed fruit. However, Azadiracha indica is
regarded by some weed ecologists as a very serious threat to riparian areas in
northern Aust. It has become invasive in Qld, NT and WA. More info on Neem
(Azadiracha indica) in Aust at:

Subject: White Cedar Trees
Alanna Moore, in her book 'Backyard Poultry - Naturally', calls Melia
azedararch the Neem Tree, and recommends the use of various parts of the
tree for treating chook ailments. 'Neempeace' from The Channon in NSW (near
Lismore) produces a spray containing the active ingredient azadirachitin
which can be used as a pest control for chooks. As Syd Curtis said 'One
man's meat is another man's poison'. The difference between a medicine and a
poison is in the quantity, even water will kill you if you drink too much of
it.
