Lawrie,

You asked: "Does anyone live in an upland kind of place with fluctuating
Blackbird numbers which might suggest regular short - medium distance
movements?"

I had a look at the Blue Mountains Bird Observers records for the past 8
years and find that Blackbirds have been recorded in all parts of the
mountains (right up to 1000 metres+) in all months of the year.
Unfortunately these records don't indicate numbers/abundance although this
is reflected to some extent in how often they are reported. They seem to be
less often reported during autumn-winter from the middle altitudes (approx
400-700m) but this is possibly due to lower detectability when the birds
are not singing. Certainly they have been reported most consistently in the
Upper Mountains (i.e. above 800m), including every month for the last 5
years. So, there is no evidence to suggest movement in this area although a
more detailed study might reveal a different pattern.

Cheers

Carol
