Melba Gully in the Otway Ranges was very busy on Saturday with large tourist groups, but it was also busy with birds. On the first section of the rainforest walk, there was a Rufous Fantail, a male Rose Robin, a pair of Satin Bowerbirds and a Collared Sparrowhawk. Two more Rufous Fantails were also seen on the walk. On the road down to the Cape Otway lighthouse, the gullies where very lively with Crimson Rosellas. Lots of White-eared honeyeaters around too, and large flocks of Gang Gang Cockatoo's feeding on a plant with little white berries. In the coastal heath were many Blue Winged Parrots, and a single White Throated Needletail was flying above. Cape Otway is a really great place to bird. Lots of different environments and some pristine vegetation and coastline. Peter |
