Sightings

28 February

There were 5 Double-banded Plovers at Alston Rd. Werribee first pond, and a Little Eagle near the You Yangs—along the road in front of the gates, thanks John & Sue O’Malley.

 

26 February

One female Red-capped Robin seen along Glenelg River Road in the Grampians N.P., thanks Steve Clark.

 

25 February

There were approx 200 Sanderlings and 8 Hooded Plovers plus one young on Killarney Beach, there were also 4 Pomarine Jaegars and several Fluttering Shearwaters off shore, VicRoads Ref Map 89 Grid G7, thanks Bill Ramsay.

 

25 February

There were 100 plus Brolgas in a paddock 10 km NE of Glenthompson, on the north side of the Maroona-Glenthompson Road, at about 8.30 am, VicRoads Ref Map 74 Grid B3, thanks Bill Ramsay.

 

24 February

On Reedy Lake at the Moolap Station Rd entrance there were 42 + Magpie Geese and a Single Glossy Ibis, thanks Peter Fuller.

 

23 February

3 White-winged Chough in plantation on farm about 10km south of Hamilton. Unusual because the nearest regular sightings are 25km to the north and 30km to the south, thanks Steve Clark.

 

22 February

Highlights of a BAYBOCA trip to Mud Island were a White-faced Storm-Petrel seen whilst approaching Mud Islands, Greater and Lesser Sand Plover, Double-banded Plover, 30+ Grey Plover, 100+ Bar-tailed Godwit, large numbers of Great and Red Knot, a single Sanderling, and a Fluttering Shearwater seen on the trip back to Portsea, thanks Tania Ireton.

 

22 February

There were 2 Black-faced Cormorants on Eagle rock near the lighthouse at Airey’s Inlet, thanks John & Sue O’Malley.

 

22 February

A single Latham's Snipe was seen in a small swamp just on the Centenary Trail bike track at Wesburn in the Yarra Valley, as well as a single Dusky Woodswallow in Rosella Road, also in Wesburn, thanks Michael Veitch.

 

21 February

On the BA Victoria boneseeding day there were 3 or 4 Diamond Firetails at the Eastern Paddock just up from the BA site, thanks Merrilyn Serong.

 

21 February

There were 2 Common Sandpipers, at Tooradin (south of Bridge on mud) and a Broad-Billed Sandpiper on Barrallier Island, Westernport Bay, thanks Graham Beal & Dale Tonkinson.

 

21 February

A Brolga was seen at Pt Cook on the afternoon of 21st Feb during the BOCA outing (possibly one of the Werribee ones?), thanks Dave Torr.

 

20 February

A pair of Wedge-tailed Eagle’s were observed at Melbourne Airport south east of the Wildwood and Bulla/Sunbury Road intersection, thanks Micah Kawalek.

 

19 February

There were a total of 8 Hooded Plovers, including three juveniles in the company of large flocks of Red-necked Stints at Lake Victoria Point Lonsdale, thanks Rod Corinaldi.

 

18 February

There were about 30 Little Corellas flying north-west over Mayer Park, Thornbury, thanks Paul Peake.

 

16 February

There were 10 Cape Barren Geese at Paradise Road, Western treatment Plant, thanks Tania Ireton.

 

15 February

On the Port Fairy Pelagic trip the highlights of the day were 2 Common Diving-Petrels, 2 White-chinned Petrels, 5 Buller's Albatross and 20 Grey-backed Storm-Petrels, thanks Rohan Clarke.

 

15 February

A single Latham's Snipe was seen on the Werribee River (K Road adjacent to the Werribee Park Golf Course) as well as Little (many) and Purple-crowned Lorikeets in the eucalypts, thanks Richard Nowotny.
