In response to Peter Fullers' comment about Magpie Geese with neck bands.
I've just checked with a colleague who works on waterfowl in Victoria and
he agrees with me that there is currently no studies being done by Serendip
(Lara, near Geelong) on Magpie Geese or any other birds.
The studies Serendip undertook in the past were wound up in the late 1980s.
It's possible that the bird Peter observed is an 'escapee' from a wildlife
park (eg. at Kyabram?) but I cannot explain the neck band he saw.
Hopefully it is not some form of entanglement which is fairly common
unfortunately in our birds.
cheers, Martin
