Dear
all
Further to Phillip's posting I have a query about
raptors in the city generally - on Saturday 14 Febuary at about 11.40 am I was
waiting to turn left into Broadway from Bay Street (in Sydney - at the Paramatta
Road/City Road/Broadway intersection) and, as you do, scanned the area to my
right. I spotted a White-bellied sea eagle in low soaring flight over Sydney
Uni. It looked like it was over the Fisher Library area at the top of the hill
and may have been catching the rising heat from the airconditioning systems or
the buildings themselves - it was a warm morning with a light breeze. While I
was not close enough to confirm the sighting I am familiar enough with WB SE's
to eliminate other similarly-sized birds as candidates. It was not a pelican -
which I have seen often in gliding flght from one part of the city to
another.
I
would be interested in reports of other WB SE or raptor sightings in the City
proper - rather than the usual suburban sightings where goshawks etc would not
be all that unusual.
Are
there any falcons etc nesting downtown? I seem to remember a thread to this
effect some time ago and reference was made to Peregrines in Melbourne
CBD.
Thanks
Robert
Last this afternoon a Brown Goshawk cruised
around the Forest Rd ridge at Arncliffe. Only got to see the underside and it
was of a darkish colour so presume it was a
juvenile.
