Some years ago I was caught in a very violent summer rainstorm, which
led to the discovery that my rucksack was not at all waterproof. My copy
of Slater was in its back pocket, and it got as wet as I did.
When I reached home I changed my clothes fast and then turned on the
iron and got a roll of kitchen paper towel. I put a sheet of paper towel
between each page of the book and then ironed my way through it, with
the paper between iron and book. The book ended up a bit deformed and
the colours faded slightly, but it was still perfectly usable.
If anyone remembers the little Gould League books on the Birds of
Southeastern Australia, I learnt about the effect of water on sized
paper the hard way, when one volume happened to be in the picnic basket
when the lid of the milk-jar came off. Pity about that.
These days any book/s carried in my pack will be in a plastic bag of
adequate size, and I no longer put books in the picnic basket.
