On Tuesday evening I observed a flock of about 30 needletails over the
coast at Bendalong (about 25km north of Ulladulla on the NSW south
coast). Having previously observed these birds (predominantly) away from
the coast, where their flight is best described as high speed darting,
on this evening their flight behaviour was very different. The
needletails were laying into the wind over the headland and remaining
almost stationary (wind hover?) at an altitude of about 75m. I had to
look twice to convince myself they were needletails.

Alastair

Subject: Needletails
Hi all,
Yesterday afternoon, at least about 30 White-throated Needletails were
circling over west Katoomba between 6.30 and 7pm under a sky full of
dark
storm clouds. That's the first time this season I've seen them from my
home, where they tend to be a fairly regular sight from late summer
through
autumn.
Cheers
Carol
