Hi
Michael & Jennie
As a
brief start, some of the terms asked about and my understanding of
them.
Tick -
"ticking" off a new bird for a birdwatcher, it may be the first time ever seen,
or the first time in a State, e.g., if one is keeping a State by State list, or
it may be first time for one's own area or property. The rules for
recording a Tick are up to the individual. For eaxmple, some will only
tick if they actually see the bird, while others may "tick" if they hear the
call and are sure they have identified it correctly.
Twitcher - a birdwatcher who places a lot of emphasis on ticking off as
many birds as possible. Usually looked down on by some more "purist" bird
enthusiasts. Remember that birders may be Scientists, photographers,
nature lovers, conservationists, Twitchers and/or casual observers. Each
and every one appreciates birds in their own way and each is of equal value - no
argument!!!
Jizz -
the general all-round behaviour and appearance of a bird. It may include
shape, size, flying pattern, group or individual behaviour, perching and feeding
style and more. With more experience, the jizz of a bird can identify it
as easily as colour, markings, call, etc.
I am
sure other contributors can add to this list if you ask specific
questions.
Regards and welcome

Hi all
I'm waiting for someone to answer Michael's query
re birding jargon - being also new at this game, I am not up with the jargon
either. Then I thought, maybe people have just replied straight to
him - which won't help ME! Would it be OK to ask for a basic list
of 'bird words' to help us newbies? Some kind person out there?
I've checked the Birding-Aus homepage archives etc. but nothing helpful (to
me). Cheers, in anticipation, Jennie
