Hi Birders,
There has been some good birding over
the past two weeks on the Central Coast. Our Little Tern colony
at Karagi Point, The Entrance continues to struggle along and has had
some success despite Silver Gulls, humans and high seas. So far 76 clutches
have been laid, 18 nests were washed away in big seas, 14 clutches have hatched
and as at today there were 19 pairs still on eggs, 2 chicks fledged, and 22
small chicks with 25 chicks banded in total.
The colony is also a safe place for
Red-capped Plovers to nest and so far they have had 6 nesting
attempts and have managed to raised at least 6 young. A lone
White-winged Black Tern was present at the Colony from 14-19
Dec and up to 24 Caspian Terns have been roosting on the sand
flats along side the colony during December. White-winged Black Terns have also
been seen on Budgewoi Lake.
On 13 December, at the Birding NSW
Central Coast Group Christmas get together a lone Square-tailed
Kite was seen by most people at the outing at Murrumbung HSD Mardi,
this is the first confirmed record for the Central Coast. Within three days
another, although possibly the same bird, was seen about 1 km away.
Collared Sparrowhawks are nesting at Murrumbung and
Cicadabirds are present there too.The Bush
Stone-curlews at Kincumber have managed to raise their chick
successfully and it is now 5 weeks old. Peregrines have been
seen at a number of places on the Central Coast and two Barking
Owls were reported from Glen Rd Ourimbah.
Have a Happy Christmas everyone and I
wish everyone good birding in 2004
Alan
